Philippines Clark Simple ways to relax and unwind after work
april 12 2011
There’s no escaping a bad day and there are lately more tough days than anything else. The only choice most of us hardworking mortals have is to reap a few peaceful minutes or an hour every day. When a vacation is out of the question and one can’t spend a lot on spas or expensive forms of entertainment, you have to be clever to find ways to do something that is cheap, cost nothing and gives the same level of satisfaction or relaxation. This article will provide some tips on how to reap huge benefits from simple ideas.
Look forward to something. Pick something to treat yourself with at the end of the day. Decide that once your working hours are done, you are going to experience some enjoyment. Decide beforehand what it will be, such as a glass of red wine by the fire, watching a movie you’ve been meaning to see, a particular dish you love, even a TV. program. Something that you look forward to can act like a tiny shield against the everyday blues. When the day drags you down, look forward to your treat.
Read a book. Whether you are into Danielle Steele or Harry Potter, reading provides an exciting escape hatch. Emerge yourself into the story and that way, any destination is possible, every adventure you are the hero, the real world loses its grip on you and all the problems leave you alone for the time being.
Art. Doesn’t matter if its clay modeling, pencil sketching or oil paint, starting your own art creations is relaxing and something that makes one feel proud of an accomplishment. Don’t get competitive or get frustrated by thinking your art looks like a kid’s. Then all the creativity and fun disappears and art becomes just another chore.
Listen to music. Put on your favorite Michael Jackson record or mellow with Celine Dion. Nothing relaxes the mind as much as music. That’s why restaurants sooth their patrons with it, why people move their bodies to it and dance. Music touches something in a person that reaches right down to the deepest hurt or depression and lifts it.
Home spa. Ok, yes. One can have a spa experience at home without all the frills (sigh, lovely frills) of a real spa. A tired body responds to some physical attention and the main feel-good trick is to take a hot shower or bath. Luxuriate in it. Don’t worry about utility bills for once. Just be aware of the hotness against your skin and love it. Buy some good-smelling scrubs like lavender, or a citrus mix, or flowers. And scrub! Have a drink
by the tub, like tea or coffee. Not alcohol, sorry. The bathroom and your bottle of sherry don’t mix. The idea with a home spa is to mellow naturally submerged in a hot tub and scents. You can systematically add items to your home spa experience; make it a point to buy one such item (brush, cloth, oil, soap, special tea, candles) once a month.
Yoga. Yoga is the slower road. If you start and practice every day for a week, then you will start to see the results. The super thing about yoga is that it does wonders for stress, strengthens the immune system and makes you a lot healthier and possibly add years to your life. You don’t need any money to do yoga. Get a book at the library or serve the web and print all the poses that you need.
Take a walk. Just don’t do it alone or where criminals might possibly hurt you or a loved one.
Spend some time with your kids doing an activity everyone loves, even if it is a board game like Monopoly. Such family times tend to get funny and even hysterical and that relaxes everyone in the house.
Groom a pet. It’s been proven that when a person grooms or strokes an animal, their blood pressure actually lowers. An animal has no human expectation on you in comparison with your boss, co-workers or even spouse. It accepts you as you are.
Write. It doesn’t matter if you write in a journal, a gratitude journal (the two journals differ), poems, prose or songs. Just write what you feel, about what you know and about what moves you. Don’t dwell too consistently on negative writing. Writing about past hurtful experiences might have its therapeutic value but if you plan on using writing plainly as a woe-is-me megaphone, then rather don’t write because then you are missing the point completely. Rather practice the freedom and uplifting happiness of writing something exciting, even if it is just a piece of fiction.
