June 15-21 named Mt. Pinatubo Week
January 26, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Board unanimously approved Resolution No. 1810 making June 15 to 21 Mt. Pinatubo Eruption Commemoration Week.
The observance of Mt. Pinatubo week will start this year and commemorated every year thereafter.
First district Board member Crisostomo Garbo stressed the urgency of the resolution during the plenary.
There is a need to immediately approve this resolution since there is a requirement to create committees who will handle the weeklong commemoration,” said Garbo.
Taking note of Garbo’s comments, Board presiding officer Vice Governor Joseller Guiao and the rest of the members of the august body concurred and moved for its approval.
It can be recalled that on June 7, 1991, Mt. Pinatubo’s first magmatic eruptions took place. A small explosion on June 12 marked the beginning of a new, more violent phase of the eruption. A third large eruption began on June 13, after an intense swarm of small earthquakes over the previous two hours. On June 14, a three-minute eruption generated a 21 kilometer-high eruption column.
All the seismographs at the then Clark Air Base had been rendered inoperative by June 15, mostly by pyroclastic density currents. Intense atmospheric pressure variation was also recorded.
The eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, and its following lahar devastation in 1995, is one of the worst disasters recorded in history, with ash falls reaching as far as Vietnam. (Jovi T. De Leon)
