Cockfight cheat arrested
CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A man was arrested when he evaded to pay after losing a bet in a cockfight arena in Angeles City over the weekend.
The suspect was identified as Rowel Reyes, 38, presently residing at 326 Lagundi St., Barangay Sto Cristo, Mexico, Pampanga but with permanent address at Valerio Subdivision, Panilao, Pilar, Bataan.
According to a police report, Reyes placed a bet against three bet collectors namely Angelito Salenga, 44, of Block 63, lot 16,Northville, Barangay Cutud, Angeles City; Arnel Manalo, 51, driver and resident of 1989 San Pablo St Barangay Claro M. Recto, Angeles City; and, Daniel Manalo, 24, of 156 Magnolia St., Salapungan, Angeles City at the Angeles Cockpit Arena at about 6:30 p.m.
After the suspect lost in one particular cockfight, Reyes eluded payment but was cornered by the three before he was able to leave the cockpit arena.
Police said the suspect convinced the trio to accompany him to the Jumbo Jenra along Jesus St. in Barangay Agapito Del Rosario where he would meet his wife and get the money from her for the payment amounting to P21,750.
But when Reyes saw an opportunity to escape, he ran towards Barangay San Nicolas and the trio gave chase up to a nearby 7-11 convenience store also in Barangay San Nicolas.
The suspect then entered a compound and managed to get a kitchen knife and pointed it to the accosting people.
Bystanders in the area were able to disarm the suspect and made a citizen’s arrest. Reyes was later turned over to the nearest police station, police said.
The suspect will be charged with Estafa, police said.
