A Wine Specialist (WS) has learned some basic wine terminology, understands label information, major wine regions and appellation concepts, wine storage and management, service techniques as well as some of the food and wine pairing theories. The WS will able to appreciate all types of wines and feel comfortable and confident when selecting, buying and recommending wine.
A WS is able to articulate wine ideas and concepts, and converse fluently with others who are interested and/or knowledgeable in wine.
COMPETENCE
A qualified wine specialist can become a sommelier in a fine-dining outlet, a store manager in a wine shop or a purchaser for a wine retail or wholesale outlet.
SALARY
Typical annual salary for a wine specialist in the Californina, USA is $32,000, dramatically higher in other states where wine specialists are less common, up to $57,000 in Kansas City for example. Salaries in Europe are in line with those in the US. For example, a wine specialist commands an annual salary of Β£35,000 in England. Even a trainee starts at Β£15,000.

INTRODUCTORY COURSE
This course offers a basic understanding of the major grapes used for making wine and their discerning characteristics as well as an introduction to fortified and sparkling wines. You will study the different components of wine appearance, aroma, and flavor of wine.
You will taste wines from around the world and be introduced to fortified and sparkling wine as well. Upon completion of this course you will have learned some basic wine terminology, understand label information, introduction to appellation concepts, rudimentary service techniques as well as some of the food and wine pairing theories.
The goal is for you to gain an appreciation for all types of wines and feel comfortable and confident when selecting and buying wine.
