Workers turn down P13 wage hike offer

LABOR group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) rejected Thursday the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines’s (Ecop) offer for a salary adjustment of no more than P13.35 per day.
KMU chairman Elmer Labog said the meager offer of the employers simply won’t satisfy the needs of the laborers that have been suffering the most from the relentless price increases of basic commodities.
“A P13.35 wage hike won’t give workers any genuine relief amid the rising prices of basic goods and of services,” said Labog.
Last Wednesday, Ecop president Edgardo Lacson said the best that employers can offer is no more than a P13.35 a day wage hike.
The Ecop reasoned that they too have been suffering from the rising basic commodity prices that have a direct effect on their production costs.
But for Labog, this is not enough reason for employers to simply offer a small amount of wage increase.
“We do not believe employers when they claim that they can only give workers a meager wage hike because of increasing fuel prices in the country. Even with the oil price hikes, capitalists have earned substantial profits over the years,” said the labor leader.
During the 32nd National Conference of Employers at Marriot Hotel, President Benigno Aquino III encouraged employers to grant productivity incentives and come up with profit incentive sharing plan for workers.
“We are advocating and we are asking: can you not come up with an incentive program for our workers wherein, if there is an opportunity to go from the tradition confrontational relationships between management and labor?” Aquino asked.
The President said he will not push for the legislated P125 across-the-board wage increase in Congress, but he appealed to employers to listen to the worker’s demand of a salary increase.
