Wine News: Winegrowers sniff fruitful vintage ahead
May 18, 2011
Warm weather and timely rainfall have prepared the way for a top vintage this year, winegrowers say.
New Zealand Winegrowers chief executive Philip Gregan said the vineyards were looking “very good”.
“The vines are looking very healthy.
“We obviously want lots of warm, fine dry weather from now on in but things are set up very well it would seem,” he said.
“Everything looks at this stage set for a very good vintage.”
Mr Gregan said it was not known yet whether there would be any oversupply concerns as the industry body was yet to carry out its pre-vintage survey on which it based its forecasts for the vintage.
That data would be available in two to three weeks’ time.
Last year, growers were being called on to repeat the previous year’s effort and keep the harvest down to 265,000 tonnes, a goal which the industry believes would “almost certainly” return it to profitability.
The wine industry has faced falling profits and markets now used to cheap wine.
However the difficulty is that the industry has more vines than demand requires. A domestic surplus that developed two years ago is coming to an end, but the coming harvest had been forecast to exceed 300,000 tonnes.
Wine is a $1billion a year export business, with volumes growing rapidly, however, the world has a wine glut and New Zealand exports more than 50 per cent of its wine.
The resulting competition and a strong New Zealand dollar have eaten into the returns, and the global financial crisis has slowed demand.
Blenheim winemaker Jane Hunter, of Hunter Wines, said the prospects for the harvest were positive, provided the weather held.
“Everything looks good at this stage. Ms Hunter said the estate had managed its crops to keep cropping levels down.
“We’re looking forward to some really good fruit from this year, all going well,” she said.
“I think there’s a general consensus that the wineries have done a pretty good job with their contract growers and their own vineyards across the valleys around here to try and keep the cropping levels down,” she said.
Canterbury winemaker Amanda Mitchell of boutique winery Braided River Wines said it had been one of the easiest years due to the absence of frosts in October and November.
“It’s been warm, it’s probably been ideal weather for grapes. We’ve had intermittent rain which has been great too,” she said.
“We’ve had good growth.
“As long as we stay warm I would say it’s going to be a really good vintage.”
Marlborough winemaker Nina Stocker of Catalina Sounds agreed that the season had been “very good” and said the estate was managing its crops carefully.
