Wine News: Testing Affordable Stemware

Why does someone prefer a specific wine glass over another? And how do you measure that? Sommelier Chris Sawyer tackled that and more for his product review, “Testing Affordable Stemware,” appearing in the February issue of Wine Business Monthly.
Sawyer conducted a special panel tasting to test to a cross-section of elegant affordable stemware now available in the marketplace. The goal of the exercise was to find the harmony, balance and potential faults that each glass shows before and during the tasting.
Glasses were ranked as to how they performed in three separate sections of analysis: the design, size and shape of stemware prior to tasting; the swirling motion of each glass; how the glass felt to maneuver; and olfactory sensations in the nose and perceived taste of wine on the palate.
Three wines from Northern California were used in the exercise, and detailed charts record the results for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon wine glasses made by various manufacturers. Certainly, tasting rooms have a lot of choices—and according to a recent WBM survey, they sell many different brands.
WBM’s Tasting Room Survey, conducted in 2010, showed that while tasting rooms largely sell a few types of glasses, their choices are also spread out across a spectrum of manufacturers.
