Wine News: New York grape harvest superb in 2010

March 3, 2011
This information comes from Jim Trezise of the New York Wine and Grape Foundation:
Finger Lakes, NY — Quality, quantity and prices of grapes processed for grape juice and wine in New York were all up in 2010 over 2009, making last year one of the best vintages in at least a decade and maybe two.
The ideal weather all year (with a couple scares) resulted in a very early harvest (reducing the risk of a killing frost) and exceptional grape quality across the board. Since “great wine is made in the vineyard”, this is likely to yield superb wines which will start to be released in the next couple months with the early varieties.
In addition, statewide grape production increased 32 percent to 176,000 tons, with table grapes accounting for 4,000 tons (2 percent), wine 34 percent of the total and grape juice about 64 percent.
Wineries and juice plants in and out of state processed 172,000 tons of grapes, a 34 percent jump from the 128,000 tons in 2009, with tonnage up 44 percent from the Lake Erie region, 53 percent from Niagara, and 11 percent from the Finger Lakes (the other regions are not reported separately).
New York wineries crushed 59,305 tons, up 17 percent and representing 35 percent of the total processed, while grape juice and other nonfermented products accounted for 110,850 tons (up 29 percent, and 65 percent of the total).
Finally, the value of the 2010 grape crop is estimated at $68.4 million, a 44 percent increase reflecting both the larger crop and higher per-ton prices for most grape varieties.
While this is good news from growers, context is also key: 2009 was an unusually small crop, and 2008 was more normal (172,000 tons harvested, $57.5 million value), so it is more meaningful to measure the increase in value against that year. In other words, 2010 was indeed a good year for growers, but higher grape prices in 2011 would also be welcome (along with another great crop).
