Wife of dead OFW returnee receives P50T
December 29, 2010
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The wife of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who committed suicide while on a flight back home received a P50,000 assistance on Tuesday.
Vilma Cueva, 36, a native of Bataan, accepted the check from Labor Undersecretary Danilo Cruz and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) chief Carmelita Dimzon.
“We are really thankful to the Owwa since they did not abandon us in our effort to find out the cause of death of my husband. We’re more than thankful that they’re giving us financial assistance,” Cueva said.
“We will use this to start a cattle-raising business. It will help me finance the studies of my three children, as well,” Cueva added.
Cueva’s children are ages 10, three, and two years old.
Aside from Cueva, a group of OFW dependents also received P50,000 worth of assistance, which they will use to start a soap-making business.
‘Mysterious’ death
Mrs. Cueva said that from Abu Dhabi, her husband, Marlon Cueva, rode a plane back to the Philippines on October 20. She waited for several hours at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport but her husband did not appear.
“Then we heard news saying somebody committed suicide inside the plane. We burst into tears when we found out it was Marlon,” Analiza Salac, Mrs. Cueva’s sister-in-law, said.
Salac said they were shocked given that they talked to a cheerful Marlon over the phone a day before his arrival.
“We refuse to believe that he committed suicide. We still want to see an intensive report of what really happened to him,” Salac said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
