Waste segregation to save San Fernando P90M
April 26, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said Sunday that the city’s strengthened solid waste management program — centering on segregation — will cut the cost of garbage disposal from P100 million annually to just about P10 million.
During the launch of the program dubbed “Handa KNB San Fernando? Now na!” at the Robinsons Starmills Pampanga, Rodriguez said the City spends hundreds of millions to dispose of its garbage taken primarily to the Metro Clark Kalangitan facility.
“We spend as much as P100 million annually in disposing our garbage. With our strengthened solid waste management program, focusing particularly on segregation at the household level and barangays, we can reduce that to as low as P10 million annually, thereby providing us with savings for other basic services,” said Rodriguez.
He added the P90 million that could be saved will be used for programs in health, education and vital infrastructure like the clean-up of waterways and Sagip Ilog.
“Hindi naman natin puwedeng isakripisyo ang serbisyo natin sa ating mga mamamayan. Dapat nating sundin ang batas about environment protection and health laws dahil ang mga ito ay magkaugnay. Let us not be selfish at huwag balewalain ang programang ito dahil ito ay salamin ng ating bukas. Tuloy-tuloy na ang programang ito na siyang bubuo ng ating pangkalahatang layunin,” Rodriguez said.
He stressed that the City Government will strictly enforce laws on segregation and proper waste disposal.
“There will be sanctions and penalties for violators. It will go on and on until it sinks into the consciousness of people,” he said.
In leading the pledge to follow segregation and protect the environment, Rodriguez reiterated: “Tayo ay magkaisa upang alagaan ang kapaligiran, panatilihing malinis ang paligid, malusog ang mga anak at mamamayan at maging matagumpay ang programang ito. Through our cooperation, sasagutin natin ito ngayon: Now na!”
