Villagers complain vs sloppy league handling
May 23, 2011
MABALACAT – Residents in Barangay San Joaquin here are in outrage over sloppy officiating and gross mishandling of a basketball tournament that resulted in a “shameful outcome”.
A technical error in the computation of points under the quotient system has caused a team’s undue exit for the second and last spot in the championship round.
Noel Tulabut, manager of Team Mapanganiv, said the league’s technical committee has declared after the game that his squad has advanced to the finals, only to reverse its decision following a mistake in its computation and announcement of margins that must be achieved by opposing teams.
The committee, through a repeated computation by Referee Lito Garcia, stated that Team Sonics has to win by six points or more in order to advance to the finals. Anything less than that requirement would push Team Mapanganiv into the championship round.
The announcement of margins that were to be maintained was made through public address system immediately before the game. At game’s end, the committee announced that Team Mapanganiv gained a seat to the finals as it lost by only five points.
“This is a serious technical error on a committee decision, which is supposed to be final and executory. Reversing a call based on a mistake that the committee members themselves had admitted must be rectified. Sadly, the committee turned its ears and eyes closed to a glaring error,” Tulabut said.
Castro admitted in meetings that referee Garcia made a mistake and said that Sonics has advanced by virtue of “corrected quotient points.”
Technical committee head Referee Pogi Castro admitted that the computations made by referee Garcia were erroneous. Castro, who was absent during the game, led the committee into reversing its decision.
Aside from Castro, the committee is also composed of Kaykay Pascual and Daniel Pineda. Both Pascual and Pineda have largely depended on the decision of Castro and other referees.
“We are not sour-graping here as the committee members themselves admitted their mistakes. The thing is their mistake has caused our rightful place in the championship,” Tulabut said.
“The announcements of margins to be kept dictated the game’s tempo and complexion and our players’ performance and we were made to believe that should we lose, it should only be by five points or less. Saying sorry to a mistake that led us to our exit is simply absurd,” said Veejay Guevarra, coach of Team Mapanganiv.
Given the serious technical error, Tulabut has called on the Mabalacat Referees Association (MRA), of which Garcia and Castro are members, to impose sanctions on erring referees.
In his letter to MRA president Tony Diaz, Tulabut said, “Sanctions must be imposed if only for local basketball aficionados to keep their trust and confidence in basketball games that will be officiated by your members.”
Tulabut said he will lobby for government authorities to implement rules and regulations on how to best govern grassroots sports, particularly basketball.
He called on the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Presiding Officer Vice Governor Yeng Guiao, a professional basketball coach himself, to look into the conduct of basketball tournaments.
The basketball tournament was organized by the San Joaquin Barangay Council and the Sangguniang Kabataan.
