Village officials urged to strengthen med assistance

GUAGUA — Board Member Fritzie David-Dizon urged village officials of Barangay Santa Filomena here on Wednesday to strengthen medical assistance in their village by making available basic over-the-counter medicines to residents.
This came as David-Dizon distributed Wednesday some P4,000 worth of medicines to barangay officials as part of her ongoing medical assistance program for the district.
David-Dizon said health awareness should start from the barangay level and that appropriate interventions and support should be given to better boast health in the community.
“Medicines like these are a big help to the community and would surely help indigents who need medicines,” David-Dizon said.
The lady board member also urged local officials to start their health awareness campaign in the barangay, saying awareness is the best defense against diseases.
Sta. Filomena village captain Ernesto Enriquez said they will use medicines given by David-Dizon for the needs of their constituents, adding the medicines will go a long way in helping indigents with minor illnesses.
David-Dizon said barangay officials in the district can help promote awareness and focus on obesity and the emergence of the so-called nutrition-related lifestyle diseases or non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular ailments, osteoporosis, and cancer, brought about by unhealthy living and poor diet habits.
She also urged barangay captains to establish their respective Botika ng Barangay (Village drug store) to better promote good health and provide affordable medicines in the grassroots level.
She said the Botika ng Barangay can be set up and managed by local government units or by an organized body of the community in order to be efficient and effective.
The organization may be a cooperative, a people’s organization or non-government organization. The interested operator when qualified will have a memorandum of agreement signed with the Department of Health (DOH).
The DOH trains the designated operator of the Botika ng Bayan on supply and financial management and proper care of medicines. The Botika ng Barangay is also required to have a supervising pharmacist.
