Veterans’ Day commemoration held in Clark
Monday, November 14, 2011
CLARK FREEPORT — As part of honoring America’s “forgotten veterans”, the Clark Veterans Cemetery Restoration Association (CVCRA) commemorated on Friday this year’s Veterans Day at the Clark Veterans Cemetery in this Freeport.
Dubbed as “11.11.11”, the commemoration which was held at the eleventh hour, day and month of the present year, was attended by some 100 veterans, which was highlighted by a wreath-laying ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the unveiling and dedication of the marker of a newly constructed memorial plaza.
The construction of a new memorial plaza is among the efforts of the CVCRA to honor the veterans, both American and Filipino, who are interred in this cemetery.
CVCRA aims to organize a group of individuals who are dedicated and committed to helping transform the Clark Veterans Cemetery from its present neglected status to one properly administered and supported by the US Government.
The status of the Clark Veterans Cemetery was overlooked at the time the former US Air Force base at Clark was transferred back to the Philippine Government.
The Clark Veterans Cemetery did not receive federal funding and was not maintained to the standards befitting those veterans who sacrificed and served their country.
The cemetery is presently administered and cared for by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2485 through voluntary efforts and donations.
