Typhoon Mina accelerates, moves north northwest
Sunday, August 28, 2011
MANILA (2nd Update, 11:31 a.m.) — Typhoon “Mina” (international codename: Namnadol) slightly accelerated Sunday as it continues to move north northwestward, said the weather bureau.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) spotted the typhoon at 60 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes as of 11 a.m. Sunday.
It is packing winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
Storm warning signal remains hoisted over Batanes Group of Island.
Babuyan Group of Islands and Calayan Group of Islands remain under storm signal number 2, while the provinces of Cagayan, Apayao, Abra and Ilocos Norte were placed under signal number 1.
The weather bureau lowered the public storm warning signal elsewhere as Typhoon Mina continues to move away from the country, said Pagasa officials.
Pagasa, however, still advised the public, especially those living in low-lying and mountainous areas in northern and central Luzon to be vigilant against possible flashfloods and landslides. Those living in coastal areas were also alerted against big waves, or storm surges generated by Mina.
The estimated rainfall amount of Typhoon Mina, as of 11 a.m. Sunday, is from 10 to 20 millimeters per hour within the 550 kilometers diameter of the typhoon, said Pagasa.
Mina earlier buried a hillside house before dawn Saturday, killing two young siblings in San Fabian town, Pangasinan. The victims were identified as Reajen Bautista, 6, and her brother John Rey Bautista, 5.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the siblings were buried in the mud and other debris for more than two hours before rescuers recovered their bodies.
In Baguio City, two siblings also died after a garbage dump’s concrete wall collapsed, burying three shanties under tons of garbage.
The NDRRMC identified the victims as Revillar Flores, 13, and Apolinario Flores, 10, who were swept about 300 yards (meters) downhill.
Another fatality in Baguio City identified as Floro Sulliven, 32, of Barangay Kias, also died after he was covered by a landslide.
Nelson Vergara, 68, of Barangay Bagong Sirang, Baras, Catanduanes, was also reported dead. His body retrieved by coastal residents of Barangay Putsan Darao around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
The seventh fatality, Ruel Cabalic Soria, of Barangay Sta. Fe, San Marcelino, Zambales, died due to drowning.
Six people remain missing as of this posting.
Several roads and bridges in northern Luzon are also impassable due to the typhoon. Clearing operations are ongoing, said the NDRRMC.
Pagasa said Mina is expected to be out of the country by Tuesday. (Sunnex)
