Transfer of NAIA to Clark a boost to local economy – Luciano
CLARK FREEPORT – The purported transfer of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) here will serve as a big booster to the local economy of Metro Clark areas including Mabalacat, Angeles City and Tarlac.
Victor Jose Luciano, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC), said making CIAC as the premier airport will pump prime the local economy of surrounding communities.
“An increased of business activities will follow-suit once the transfer of NAIA to Clark is completed,” said Luciano as he appealed to various local government units, non-government organizations and the regional development council to support the plan.
While the plan is still under discussion, Luciano said he is optimistic that CIAC will be the next premier airport as compared to other international airports in the country citing the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) after learning of the project.
He said the JICA group expressed its support to the project during a meeting last Friday.
For the meantime, Luciano said expansion project of terminal 2 is ongoing and hopefully to finish the project soon.
He said application for the opening of flight to Guam which is a US territory is still pending with the Civil Aeronautical Board (CAB).
“Once approved, it will be CIAC first flight to Guam,” said Luciano.
Though the planned transfer is not that easy, Luciano said it will be a phase-by-phase strategy. “This cannot be done overnight, maybe the starting point will be the installation of speed railway system from NAIA to Clark.”
“Speed railways system was the request of frequent flyers especially tourists who visited the country,” Luciano told Susi sa Balita aired over GVFM 99.1 hosted by veteran journalist John Susi.
He said the next step will be the construction of budget terminal separate from the international gateway.
However, Luciano said the government will take about five to seven years to complete the project.-Jess Malabanan
