Toxic waste from fourth district towns

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — While Macabebe Mayor Annette Balgan claims that the toxic waste polluting Macabebe’s river comes from the city’s industrial establishments, some of her constituents said other fourth district towns should also be looked into.
Noel Quiambao, information officer of Barangay San Esteban, Macabebe, said fishermen from their village and neighboring villages point to San Simon and Minalin as sources of toxic wastes.
“I used to be a coordinator for the Butil Party-list, and according to fishermen who were members of the party, toxic waste that builds up in our town would primarily come from San Simon and Minalin,” Quiambao said.
Quiambao also dismissed Balgan’s claims that the toxic waste build-up in their town is caused by several San Fernando-based companies.
“I doubt it, because I don’t see how toxic waste from the city’s river would make its way to the Pampanga River and then to the Macabebe River,” Quiambao said.
Quiambao, also a former village council member, said household waste is a growing problem in their town right now, not toxic waste.
He added that San Miguel Corporation (SMC), one of the alleged sources of toxic wastes, has even helped their coastal village.
“Some SMC officials even visited us, though we’re only reachable by boat. They taught us how we can best care for the environment. They even made a school for us,” Quiambao said.
At least five school buildings, Quiambao said, were built by the SMC for their village. (Charlene Cayabyab)
