Town council to probe basketball fiasco
April 28, 2011
MABALACAT — The City Council here is planning to investigate the controversial participation of the town’s delegates to the Inter-Town Basketball League parade without shoes.
Mayor Marino Morales and Councilor Jerry Basilio bared this on Wednesday, both of them saying the Municipal Council is going to conduct its own probe regarding the incident.
Morales earlier lambasted Mabiga Councilor Carlo Dizon for allegedly causing disgrace to the town during basketball tournament parade held in the capital town of San Fernando.
He said Dizon instructed players of Team Mabalacat to remove their shoes and wear slippers during the parade held at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center on April 17.
In a letter to Dizon, Morales said the irresponsible and offensive act of the Mabiga councilor caused humiliation, embarrassment and disgrace to the town.
This, despite the financial support extended to the team for training and meals, according to the mayor.
“We were informed that you and the players of Team Mabalacat, representing the Municipality of Mabalacat, appeared and attended the said event and that you instructed them to remove their rubber shoes and wear slippers only,” Morales told Dizon.
Dizon had been asked to explain the incident or face administrative or criminal sanction for the incident “which is unbecoming of a barangay official and public servant,” Morales said.
Morales’s party blamed Provincial Board Member Crisostomo Garbo for the incident, saying the latter acts as the players’ adviser.
“Parang kinakampihan pa ni board (Garbo) [si Dizon at yung mga players],” Morales said.
Garbo, on the other hand, told some local newsmen, including broadcaster Rudy Simeon, that he is not the adviser of the team.
According to Garbo, he just accompanied the players in a courtesy call to the mayor before the league started.
Garbo also disclosed that the athletes have no intention to cause humiliation and disgrace to the town.
The board member also suggested that the mayor should have invited Dizon and the players to shed light regarding the incident.
