Sylvaner Wine,Medieval Villeges and Viking through Vineyards

March 17, 2011

Mittelbergheim (just like Riquewihr) is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France…

But you won’t find busloads of tourists in this wine road village (at least not until they find out about it). So until they do, you can enjoy this beautiful Alsatian village in peace and quiet.

And if you love Sylvaner wine, Mittelbergheim is the only village in Alsace that is allowed to grow it in its Zotzenberg Grand Cru vineyards (usually reserved for Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris).

What does that mean? It means that this area in Alsace makes some very good Sylvaner wine!

Hopefully you’ll find everything that you need to know about Mittelbergheim France…

You’ll have all the peace and quiet you want staying in Mittelbergheim…

And at the same time you’ll be a short drive away from bigger villages and cities when you want to get away from all that peace and quiet.

For hikers and bikers there a number of villages listed below (and even more that I didn’t have room for) that are less than 5 miles away.

Distances given are the approximate distances from the center of Mittelbergheim.

Villages with a * have a train stop or train station.

Barr*

1 mile/2 km

Barr is a wine road village in Alsace that attracts fewer tourists AND has a train station, but it’s not because it’s not a beautiful little village with adorable winding cobblestone streets. So if you are looking for a quieter Alsace vacation, Barr might be for you.

Andlau

2 miles/3 km

Andlau has been making wine since Roman times when retired Roman legionaires started planting vineyards here. If you love old medieval houses, you’ll see lots of them here in Andlau and if you’re in the mood it’s only a half day hike (3 hours average there and back) up to see two medieval castles (Haut Andlau and Spesbourg). And when you get back you’ll have a good excuse to sit back and try some Alsace wine on your Alsace vacation!

Heiligenstein

2 miles/3 km

After you pass Barr if you’re on your way to Ottrott or Mont Saint Odile, you’ll find the village of Heiligenstein. It’s a pretty little wine village with one big difference. They produce Klevener de Heiligenstein wine (which can only be produced in that particular area). It’s related to the Traminer family, so if you enjoy Gewurztraminer, you might want to try this historic variety in Alsace.

Ottrott

6 miles/9 km

Ottrott is a beautiful wine village in Alsace with quite a lot of castle ruins if you’re interested… It’s also the closest village to Mont Sainte Odile and you can walk to it in about an hour or drive. Ottrott is also famous for its Pinot Noir (they’ve been making it since the 1100s).

Obernai*

7 miles/11 km

Obernai is a small town or very large village on the wine road. They’ve been making wine for over 13 centuries now (starting in the 700s at least). If you loved Colmar, you will really love Obernai! It’s a very beautiful town and the vineyards are much closer than in Colmar. Obernai is also the birthplace of the patron saint of Alsace, Sainte Odile.

Mont Sainte Odile

7 miles/11 km

Mont Saint Odile is a 7th century convent about a 20 minutes drive from Obernai up in the Vosges mountains with some fantastic views of Alsace. This mountain is very popular. First the Celts were here, then the Romans, and then between 680 and 690, Saint Odile founded her convent. There are some lovely short hikes where you can see intact remains from the Celts and Romans as well as a hotel and restaurant at the convent. The convent itself has been enlarged over the years and renovated many times since being built in the late 600s.

Dambach la Ville*

7 miles/11 km

Dambach la Ville is the sort of Alsace wine village where you can walk around anywhere and see something really beautiful, medieval city walls and gates, beautiful old homes and a very interesting chapel. And there is a train station, so you can try one of the 30 wine producers in Dambach la Ville without renting a car!

Rosheim*

9 miles/14 km

Rosheim is one of the few villages in Alsace that wasn’t severely damaged in the Thirty Years War in the 1600s, so there are a lot of beautiful old buildings still intact. One of those beautiful old buildings is the “Pagan House” the oldest residential building in Alsace still standing. Rosheim is also a wine road village if you want a little wine with your history on your Alsace vacation…

Scherwiller*

10 miles/16 km

Scherwiller is known for its Riesling, so if you’re a fan, you’ll want to stop by. Speaking of which, Scherwiller has a train station so you can drink to your heart’s content! And you can make a 45 minute walk to two castles, the Ortenbourg and Ramstein from the village.

Molsheim*

13 miles/21 km

Molsheim is best known as the home of Bugatti. You can still tour the Bugatti Foundation in Molsheim or you can go just next door to Dorlisheim where their new Bugatti car factory is now located. But Molsheim is still a wine road village and its medieval city walls are still standing…right next to vineyards even!

Mutzig*

14 miles/23 km

Mutzig is a small wine producing village in Alsace near Molsheim that is probably more famous for its beer than wine (although it has some excellent wine as well). And for those of you who love military history, there is Fort Mutzig built in the very late 1800s by the German Empire. If World War One history appeals to you, this might be a good stop for you.

Struthof Concentration Camp

14 miles/23 km

The Natzweiler Struthof concentration camp was the ONLY one of its kind in Alsace or France (technically part of Germany during World War Two). The Struthof is pretty impressive with plenty of information in English. You’ll need around 3 hours for the visit.

Marlenheim

20 miles/32 km

Marlenheim is considered to be the first stop on the Alsatian wine road (or the last stop depending on which direction you are going). It’s a beautiful village not far from Strasbourg and every year the town puts on a traditional Alsatian wedding on the 14th and 15th of August.

Schirmeck*

20 miles/32 km

If you would like to know more about the Alsatian people (particularly about their experiences during World War Two) then you have to go to the Alsace Moselle Memorial in Schirmeck. Even if you normally don’t like museums, you’ll like this one because it’s more of an experience than an exhibit and it’s built at the location of a former Nazi Prison Camp (not concentration camp).

Strasbourg*

23 miles/37 km

Just in case you didn’t already know…Strasbourg is the capital of Alsace. It has a gothic cathedral that you can climb to the top of (if you think you’ve got what it takes), 16th and 17th century historic neighborhoods, at least 12 museums, shopping, and everything else.
