Suspected hitman of carjack gang has string of cases, too
January 31, 2011
MANILA, Philippines—The man tagged by police as the hitman of the Dominguez car robbery syndicate was a neighbor of Raymond Dominguez – the suspected syndicate head – in Mandaluyong City, and was previously arrested and charged with carjacking and frustrated homicide, but was released after he posted bail, a police official said.
Senior Supt. Anthony Yarra, the head of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) and a member of the Special Investigation Task Group on the murders of car dealers Venson Evangelista and Emerson Lozano and the latter’s associate, Ernani Sensil, made the disclosure after Raymond denied knowing the hitman, named as Rolly Fernandez.
Police has identified Fernandez as the gunman of the robbery group and the one who shot car dealer Venson Evangelista, based on the statement by Alfredo Mendiola, one of the arrested suspects in the case.
Yarra said Fernandez was briefly detained in the CIDU detention cell in Camp Karingal last November after he was discharged from a hospital due to gunshot wounds.
“We have records to show they know each other and live not far from each other in Mandaluyong City,” Yarra said.
Fernandez was arrested after he and two other suspects who managed to escape, engaged in a car chase and shootout with operatives from the Highway Patrol Group in October last year in Project 6, Quezon City.
Records showed that Fernandez and his group were trying to escape from pursuing HPG operatives who tailed them from Pampanga when their vehicle, a stolen Mitsubishi Montero, hit a taxi and spun several times.
Fernandez was wounded in the incident, while one of his companions, identified as Albert de la Cruz, was killed in the shootout.
The records also showed that Fernandez continued driving in an attempt to escape.
According to police accounts, De la Cruz’s body was dragged more than a kilometer away, before Fernandez stopped the car, and surrendered due to gunshot wounds.
