Study cites Pampanga airport as best alternate landing field

CLARK FREEPORT — The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), in a study, has cited the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) as the best alternate airport next to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
In this light, Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) president Victor Jose I. Luciano said he recently briefed Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas about the potential of the Clark airport as the country’s international gateway.
Luciano issued the statement following reports that President Benigno Aquino III, during his recent visit in Clark, verbally stated critical congestion at NAIA, and that the National Government is eyeing DMIA as the premier airport.
But Luciano said no official statement regarding the full development of the Clark airport has been issued by the President yet.
Aquino’s verbal pronouncement about the two airports was also echoed to local newsmen by Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president Felipe Antonio Remollo.
Luciano expressed optimism that the DOTC will consider the Jica study, which was conducted in six areas where an airport can be located.
Jica, in a separate occasion, informed the DOTC that with an 80 percent marking, Clark obtained a great margin over five other areas, including Sangley Point in Cavite, Angat and Obando in Bulacan, Talim Island in Rizal, and Taguig in Metro Manila, which all obtained below 50 percent.
Luciano said the DOTC is planning to operate a twin airport system, where the DMIA and NAIA will be interconnected.
NAIA will serve Metro Manila, Southern Manila and the Bicol region, while Clark will serve Northern Luzon and other parts of national capital region (NCR), including the Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela) district, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Luciano said the Clark airport is continuously being developed.
“Clark is the airport that can be ready the soonest because of its world class facilities,” Luciano said.
DMIA Terminal 1, which is equipped with two passenger bridges, has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers annually.
A quick shuttle (bus express service) and a City Air Terminal in Metro Manila will also be established in Metro Manila for Clark airport passengers, according to Luciano.
“Passengers for Clark can check-in at the air terminal and take special buses en route to Clark,” he said.
