Students told: Avoid violent initiation rites
MALACANANG urged students on Tuesday to refrain from participating in violent activities like hazing following the death of another freshman law student of San Beda College due to alleged brutal initiation rites.
“Kung totoo man na ito ay biktima ng hazing, itigil na po natin ang ganitong cycle of violence, wala namang nagbe-benefit sa ganito (If it’s true that the victim died of hazing, let’s stop this cycle of violence. No one will benefit from it),” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.
She assured that the Philippine National Police will conduct thorough investigation on the case of Marc Andrei Marcos, a freshman law student of San Beda College.
Television reports said Marcos died last Tuesday after going through a violent hazing ritual in Dasmarinas, Cavite on Sunday.
The San Beda Law Student Government confirmed Marcos’s death in a post on its Facebook page.
Pending police investigation, the case is being treated by authorities as a “mauling” incident.
“We condemn in the most (sic) strongest terms the hazing activities and the deaths that arise therefrom for breeding a culture of fear, violence and impunity in schools and universities, which are supposedly centers of free discourse, learning and progressive thought,” Kabataan party-list said in a statement.
If the hazing angle proves true, Marcos would be the second San Beda law student to die from hazing this year after Marvin Reglos, who was killed in February.
Last February, the Kabataan party-list group filed House Resolution 2188, directing the committees on higher and technical education and youth and sports development to conduct an inquiry on death of Reglos.
Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile proposed stricter implementation of the law rather than revising it.
“We have to improve law enforcement. Charge and punish those who are responsible if necessary, whether it’s murder or homicide,” he said in a chance interview.
Twenty-one years since the passage of Republic Act 8049 — the law that regulates hazing and other forms of initiation rites in fraternities and sororities — hazing activities had continued, which resulted in numerous fatalities without single conviction under the law.
