Student group to support Hacienda farmers’ rally

MABALACAT — The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP)-Central Luzon, an alliance of tertiary student publications, has expressed support for the July 21 protest-rally to be held at Hacienda Luisita.
In a press statement, the CEGP Central Luzon said hundreds of farmers and supporters from people’s organizations, and the youth sector will be marching from Luisita Park to Tanedo Street at the city proper of Tarlac.
The protest action is in response to Supreme Court’s ruling dated July 5, 2001 that the students said was “wiping again the hope that there would be lands for the farmers of Hacienda Luisita.”
“It is a win-win opportunity to the Cojuangco clan. If the farmers choose the Stock Distribution Plan (SDP), the farmers are technically ‘stockholders’. But how much do they get from it? Farmers earn more when they all get the earnings from the land they are tilling. Also, provided that the farmers want the land, still they shall be paying for it, to whom? Again, to the Cojuangcos,” said Carl Andrion, CEGP chairperson for Central Luzon.
Andrion said the CEGP believes that the root of the poverty, which President Aquino is fantasizing to resolve, is the landlessness of majority of the farmers.
The Hacienda Luisita land dispute is the epitome among many other land disputes that continue to exist in this oligarchic country, according to Andrion.
“It all boils down to the president’s decisiveness to serve his people of which he often claimed. He promised to distribute the HLI land. But as the struggle proceeds, nothing much has happened. That was ungentlemanly. That’s how he messed up,” Andrion added.
The CEGP stated that all government officials whose powers come from the people shall defend and uphold the welfare of the majority and should not be driven to further protect their interests.
“The Campus journalists and members of CEGP, must objectify the gist of ‘student publications as alternative media’ and thus intensifying the campaign to peddle pro-people journalism especially now that the guild is celebrating its 80th Anniversary this July 25,” Andrion said.
“What we ask is for the resolution of the HLI case; that the land shall be finally distributed to the farmers, the rightful owners. As the cliché ‘matuwid na daan’ goes, PNoy should make a firm decision to resolve the problem. After all, he’s directing the Supreme Court. Is this the kind of change he had promised? Only a change of face in the presidency,” he added.
