Spratlys claimants asked to adhere to international law

June 23, 2011
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday exhorted all claimants of the Spratly Islands to abide by the international law when addressing the territorial dispute.
Aquino failed to give a direct response when asked whether he supported United States (US) Senator John McCain’s call to expand military and political support to Southeast Asian nations so that they can stand up against China, which has been reportedly flexing its muscles over the Spratlys dispute.
The President insisted that there will be no issue over the Spratly group of islands should all claimants adhere to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos).
Under the Unclos, the Philippines has territorial claims over parts of the Spratly group of islands located within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.
The Reed Bank (Recto Bank), which is located 80 miles off Palawan, is not part of the disputed islands in the West Philippine Sea and has long been considered as part of the Philippines.
“Any call for stability, any call for peace, any call for a peaceful resolution on the West Philippine Sea is something that we would appreciate,” Lacierda said.
McCain, a senior member of the Republican Party, noted that the US should help Asian nations to develop early warning systems and deploy coastal vessels in the disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).
“We don’t know what audience Senator John McCain is addressing but it’s similar to the call of the Asean, calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the West Philippine Sea, and that’s certainly something that we appreciate,” Lacierda added.
The Department of Foreign Affairs also supported the call of McCain.
US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas recently affirmed support for the Philippines over the Spratlys issue.
“The Philippines and the United States are strategic treaty allies. We are partners. We will continue to consult and work with each other on all issues, including the South China Sea,” Thomas said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
