Speed limit to be set on widened roads

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Board Member Tarcicio DC Halili said the Provincial Board, through a resolution he will sponsor, will impose a speed limit on widened portions of MacArthur Highway in this city.
“The DPWH [Department of Public Works and Highways] has committed before that once the highway has been expanded, a speed limit has to be set to avert accidents and risks to pedestrians and motorists, with such wide roads of up to six lanes,” Halili said.
The lawmaker said a speed limit of about 40 kilometers per hour (kph) to 50 kph must be observed by drivers plying the route.
“It must be 40 kph to 50 kph so that when accident occurs, which we hope will not happen, the impact will not be so great to cause loss of lives. It has to consider that widened roads pass through highly populated commercial and residential areas,” said Halili, adding that merely crossing the widened highway poses risks already.
He said setting a speed limit for all types of vehicles using the road will save lives and properties.
DPWH Regional Director Alfredo Tolentino, in a separate interview, supported Halili’s statements, saying the agency is set to install signs limiting and regulating vehicle speed at the MacArthur Highway, including Jose Abad Santos Avenue.
“We are currently studying the matter of limiting vehicle speed along these widened roads starting at Jose Abad Santos Avenue. We will install signages, including ‘no parking’ signs in the outer lanes to prevent accidents from happening and lessen the dangers and risks to motorists and pedestrians,” said Tolentino.
