South Korean Students to Be Deported From Philippines
Immigration authorities in the Philippines are planning to deport this month at least 70 South Korean students of English who arrived in the country without proper documents.
Local news reports say the students, aged 10 to 16, were brought to the Philippines in a group by seven South Korean sponsors and were enrolled in a school. But Philippine authorities say they entered the country on tourist visas and did not have permits to attend classes.
The foreign ministry says the sponsors also are being expelled and will not be able to return to the Philippines.
The South Korean daily newspaper JoongAng said in a report Monday that small agencies commonly arrange study trips abroad without obtaining proper permits because that helps cut down costs.
The report commended the Philippine government for agreeing to return the children’s passports and send them safely home.
