fans of the great Grand Crus of Chambertin find the uncanny ability of these wines to manage the impossible relationship of power with elegance inside one bottle to be ever so mind blogging; however there is nothing mind blogging about enjoying these great wine; everything seems to be in such perfect balance there doesn’t seem to be any point in dissecting it for the sake of producing an eloquent description. WHITE WINE

1999 Meursault, Chateau De Guettes, Francois Parent

the richness and intensity of flavors for a good white wine from Meursualt have besotted fans of Chardonnay for ages; 1999 was a fantastic year in Burgundy for both red and white wines, even though it was only pretty good in Bordeaux; these wines have amazing ageing potential as this 1999 Mersault shows us; this wine is matured and ready to show us a good time, for years to come; pair this with seafood, poultry and white meat even if the sauce is a little heavy; it is great with a variety of soft cheeses also; enjoy! Also available are the 1997 and 1998 vintages of the same wine.

1990 Château Olivier Blanc, Grand Cru Classé, Graves

there is no reason why 90% of wine lovers think of red wine when they think of Bordeaux; indeed for fans of Sauvignon Blanc who long for a white wine that is less grassy and has a little more in body and substance, these superb white wines from Bordeaux’s Graves appellation is the perfect dinner wine for a very large variety of white-wine dishes; shellfish dishes are particularly favored but they are also an ideal companion for pork also.

2008 Saint-Aubin, Côte de Beaune, Lupè-Cholet

it is not clear why the fabulous whites of Saint-Aubin have eluded the craze of fans of Burgundy’s white wines; these wines have been surprisingly underrated for decades only now beginning to enjoy the respect and recognition they deserve; these medium-bodied Chardonnay wines are pure, vigorous and attractive when enjoyed on their own from lunch to dinner or with seafood, salad, sandwiches, poultry, white meat and a variety of soft creamy cheeses also.

1998 Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Morgeot, 1er Cru Côte de Beaune, Olivier Leflaive

a really classy white wine from Burgundy’s famed wine-producing region; this is no ordinary bottle of Chardonnay; it is a seriously complex white wine, so interesting that one can spend hours enjoying it even without a bite of food. However this Chassagne-Montrachet will go very well with a nice seabass in white sauce or veal; try to pan-fried barracuda with it, may still be on the a la carte menu.

1998 Saint-Romain, Côte de Beaune Chateau Des Guettes, Francois Parent

Saint-Romain is one of the terroirs in Burgundy that produce white wines with strong mineral notes, a quality that connoisseurs seek in fine Chardonnay; the wine is dry and vigorous, nervy even, a bit too sharp when young, needing ageing in the bottle to achieve a smoother touch; this Saint-Romain white wine keeps on refreshing the palate after every bite of food, really nice with fish especially steamed or fried, excellent with Camembert cheese also.
The 1999 vintage is also available.

1998 Savigny-Lès-Beaune, Côte de Beaune, Simon Bize & Fils

Although only a small quantity of white wines is produced from this small wine region which boasts no fewer than 22 premier cru vineyards, fans of high quality white wines of good value for money often take the trouble to seek them out. The crisp lemony flavors make this white wine an ideal companion for white fish in white sauce, white meat even in slightly creamy sauces, and soft creamy cheeses also.

1996 Puligny Montrachet, La Garenne, 1er Cru Côte de Beaune, Francoise & Denis Clair

Wine lovers hate to pay a lot of money for wine but in the face of wines of the caliber of the likes of this 1996 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru by a famous producer like Francoise and Denis Clair, it gets really hard to resist the temptation to splurge a little. When such a graceful bottle is on the table, one is well advised to keep the food accompaniment simple and unobtrusive. This kind of wines can easily make a meal. It is one to remember long after the bottle is emptied.

2010 Mercurey, Lupè-Cholet

often characterized as the poor man’s Pommard, these red wines of Mercurey made entirely from Pinot Noir are among the best from Burgundy’s sub-region of Côte Chalonnaise. This wine is full-bodied, smooth-textured and it offers abundant bright red fruits to compliment a good variety of dishes on the menu today. At this price, it is practically irresistible even if it is not necessarily the most distinguished and complex wines in France.

2011 Mâcon-Lugny, Lupè-Cholet

100% chardonnay but dry and crisp as a Sauvignon Blanc and fruity as a Riesling, just about one of the best white wines for everyday enjoyment either on its own during any part of the day or with food ranging from sandwiches to seabass and barracuda; 375ml half-bottles make it so convenient for diners to enjoy more than one kind of wines with their meals even if they are not dining with a big group of wine drinkers

2008 Chianti Classico Chiantigiane Loggia del Sole

made primarily from the Sangiovese winegrape which is also the core of the famous wines of Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti is known by restaurant goers as one of the most food-friendly red wines in the world; medium-bodied red wines, mildly intense in fruit and all its other components supported by fresh acidity are an invigorating companion to all sorts of food from pizza to steak, hamburgers to pasta and even slightly spicy recipes; Chianti Classico is a classification highly respected and sought after by fans of Italian wine as it is generally regarded as the cream of the crop of Chianti wines which can at times be a little less consistent and reliable than one would hope for.

2003 Crémant de Bourgogne, Denis Fouquerand et Fils

Is this Champagne? Many wondered when they popped the cork of this classy vintage 2003 Crémant de Bourgogne. Once we get past the label, the wine speaks for itself, in body, texture, intensity of flavors, vigor and a certain depth and complexity that makes this not only a delightful sparkling wine but a serious wine to engage over a nice meal. The price also speaks of how this kind of sparkling wine from Burgundy is incredibly undervalued, good for us, wine lovers.

 

NV Crèmant de Bourgogne, Lupè-Cholet

Fresh sparkling wine from Burgundy, not something that Manila wine lovers see every day in their favorite wine shop and supermarket wine aisles but an excellent alternative to the often-over-priced Champagne. Produced in exactly the same fashion as Champagne and using the same blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it is not surprising that they taste remarkably similar to and almost indistinguishable from Champagne. At a fraction of the cost of a Champagne, these Crèmant de Bourgogne are offer splendid value for money. Enjoy this with a wide variety of dishes from Cavier to oysters, salads to prawns, white fish to creamy cheeses and of course, the classic – strawberries.

 

NV Closquinet Brut Champagne

Champagne has earned the reputation of being one of the most overpriced wines in the world. Be that as it may, it still occupies a unique position in the hearts of wine lovers. Smaller producers such as Closquinet have broken ranks with the famous Champagne houses which have collectively all but monopolized the trade and labeled their own wines.
