SMEs wary of cloud-computing solutions

SMALL and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Philippines remain cautious about embracing cloud-computing services with security considered as a major barrier to their adoption, according to a recent study commissioned by Microsoft.
A survey of 111 local companies revealed that cloud adoption in the country is directly linked to organizational size with larger companies accepting the technology at a much faster rate than smaller businesses, similar to a trend observed in other key Asia Pacific markets.
Only 18 percent of small companies, which have 50 or less personal computers, are using or planning to migrate to the cloud, significantly lower than the 46 percent of large companies, which have more than 500 PCs.
“It’s related to the lack of understanding of small companies. They have the most to gain but they are not taking advantage of this,” said Michael Barnes of Springboard Research, the survey’s lead analyst.
The Philippines ranked fifth among eight nations that participated in the survey in terms of cloud understanding with only 18 percent of local firms considering it as a top priority with significant funding in place. About 44 percent deemed it as one of many IT priorities, while the remaining 38 percent showed interest but had no funding allocation.
Barnes expects an acceleration in the adoption of cloud by smaller firms because their limited resources will prompt them to source IT services to improve efficiency and cut costs.
“Companies are keen to adopt cloud computing but their understanding of the cloud is not complete and they are initially leaning towards approaches that mostly closely map to their existing skills, experience and investments, hence, the strong preference for private clouds over public clouds,” he said.
Most respondents cite the ability to support unpredictable workloads and increase business flexibility as the most significant challenges as well as the drivers of cloud adoption in the Philippines.
Security concerns remain a major barrier to cloud adoption in the Philippines as well as cost, data privacy, residency or ‘less control,’ and access to reliable and affordable broadband.
About 70 percent of Philippine organizations expect cloud to increase the role of telco providers or other hosting service providers in their companies, the highest rate in Asia Pacific.
“If you don’t have reliable broadband access, then cloud computing doesn’t work,” said Barnes.
Servers, storage and email are the top three cloud applications in the Philippines in terms of current usage, with Microsoft considered as the leader in cloud computing in the country at 26 percent followed by Google at 21 percent.
Conducted by Springboard Research, the survey aims to test the attitudes to cloud computing among 833 IT and business decision-makers in key Asia Pacific markets. The study was conducted from December 2010 to March 2011.
