CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — SM City Clark and SM City Pampanga hosted Tuesday reading sessions and donation of books simultaneously with 41 SM malls across the Philippines and in Xiamen, City Chengdu and International Square in Jinjiang, China.
The activity was held together with the SM Committee on Youth and Children’s Welfare, in line with its commitment to promote continuous learning and values education for the young.
The highlight of the reading session was Dr. Jose Rizal’s “Ang Pagong at ang Matsing” (at the Trubner’s Oriental Record in London), which celebrated Rizal’s 150th anniversary this year.
Together with the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Book Development Board, Inquirer Read Along, Vibal Publishing, BDO Foundation and SM Foundation, the book day activity-campaigns cultivated “a habit for reading that would further boost a child’s development at an early age.”
The activity was supported by the turnover of new, hardbound books to different public schools nationwide in support to DepEd’s Adopt-A-School program, as well as UN’s Millennium Development Goals to better education and improve literacy, said Public Relations Officer Rain Cervantes.
At SM City Pampanga, broadcaster Perry Pangan read to active children from Ayala Orchard Village School, Kambasi Elementary School and Sto. Rosario Day Care Center a story titled “Bahaghari,” while John Paul Bascon, Marketing Officer of BDO Pampanga read the story, “Isa Dalawa Tatlo, Mayroon Akong Regalo.”
City of San Fernando committee on education chairman Councilor Jimmy Lazatin delivered an inspirational message to the students and teachers.
Over at SM City Clark, hosting the book day program is Inquirer’s Tonette Orejas. Guest readers included Angeles City social welfare officer Heidi Patio and Joan Gueco, marketing officer of BDO Clark who read stories for students of Sto. Rosario Elementary School, Sta. Maria Elementary School, Special Education Elementary School and Sta. Teresita Elementary School.
“With more than three million customers going to our malls daily, and approximately 1.3 million being children, we have put it upon ourselves to make our malls not just child-friendly, but more importantly, an avenue for a kid’s growth and learning,” said SM City Pampanga mall manager Lana Erroba.
She added: “SM has grown beyond shopping, entertainment, and leisure. We have grown to be venues for affirmative action and social development. We have grown into becoming instruments for caring for children.”
Erroba said the primary objective of the SM Cares campaign is for kids to have fun in learning, by experiencing the wonderful world of books through digital storytelling with celebrities, book-character parade, literary exhibits, book donation drive, “write shops” for children’s literature and many more activities that would instill proper values and reinforce a child’s rich and colorful imagination.
