Sipalay, Hinoba-an brace for aftershocks

SIPALAY City and Hinoba-an in the southernmost tip of Negros Occidental will likely experience aftershocks for the next six months, according to Adonis Belnas of the Provincial Disaster Management Program (PDMP).
Belnas said that so far the Sibulan station of Philvolcs has recorded 308 aftershocks since the 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit province Tuesday morning.
Twenty-seven of these were felt in Negros Occidental.
He added that aftershocks will be experienced in both areas for the next six months, with the possibility that these will reach even a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that could trigger a tsunami.
That is, he clarified, if the earthquake trench reaches the Sulu sea.
He said an earthquake with a 4.6 magnitude, which is tectonic in origin hit Sipalay and Hinoba-an at 12 a.m. Friday. The earthquake did not trigger any evacuation in Sipalay and Hinobaan.
Belnas expressed confidence that so far the people in these areas are prepared.
He also cautioned the residents along the coastline to fully observe the sea situation. If they notice something unusual, they should immediately evacuate, he advised.
He pointed out that the unusual low tide and high tide of the seas indicate an impending tsunami.
Earlier, the PDMT disclosed that Sipalay City, Hinobaan and Cauayan towns are tsunami prone areas.
