Signal no. 1 up over 5 Luzon areas due to ‘Falcon’

MANILA — The weather bureau raised storm signal number one over five areas in Luzon after a tropical depression intensified into a tropical storm Wednesday night.
Tropical Storm “Falcon” packing maximum sustained wind of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph, threatens extreme northern Luzon as it maintained its strength and continues to move west northwestward.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said areas under storm signal number one include Isabela, Cagayan, Calayan Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands, and Batanes Group of Islands. As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, Pagasa spotted the storm 290 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes. It moves west-northwest at 19 kph.
“Falcon” is expected to be 200 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao City by Thursday evening and 120 kilometers north of Basco, Batanes by Friday morning.
The US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning System and website Weather Underground predicted that Falcon will traverse Taiwan before heading to eastern China this weekend.
Pagasa tracks its position at 60 kilometers north of Taiwan or 540 kilometers north northeast of Basco, Batanes by Saturday evening.
Several areas in Mindanao are still reeling from the effects of Tropical Depression “Egay”, which left the country for China last Monday.
