Shooting range could open this summer

An indoor shooting range on Kingston Highway could open by the end of June.
The Floyd County Commission approved on Tuesday the rezoning necessary for Mark Childers to run the facility out of the former J&J Safety Products at 3448 Kingston Highway.
Childers said he is working with Meggitt Training Systems and the National Rifle Association on the design.
“We’d like to open by mid-June, but it might be the end of the month or early July,” he said.
There was no opposition at the public hearing.
The board’s vote was 3-0, by Commission Chairman Eddie Lumsden and Commissioners Garry Fricks and Irwin Bagwell. Commissioner John Mayes abstained and Commissioner Chad Whitefield was not present.
Also on Tuesday, the board accepted a state road-paving contract for 12.1 miles of county roads.
The paving contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation provides funds to resurface 0.15 miles of Bert Road; 2.64 miles of Bethel Church Road; 0.40 miles of Charleston Drive; 0.58 miles of Dugger Drive; 3.00 miles of Old Rockmart Road; 3.40 miles of Texas Valley Road; 0.34 miles of Tremont Drive; and 1.70 miles of Walker Mountain Road.
County Manager Kevin Poe said the GDOT awards Local Maintenance and Improvement Grants annually, choosing the roads from a list the county submits.
“They have the final say-so,” he said.
Commissioners also awarded a contract to Williams, Sweitzer & Barnum to design an entrance road and signalized intersection into the North Floyd Industrial Parkat Ga. 140 and Ga. 53.
“They’ll coordinate the best place for an entrance with the future widening of 140, plus a short road,” Poe said.
The engineering firm offered to do the work for a $44,900 fee, the lowest of four proposals, and will get another $5,000 to prepare the construction bid documents.
The board tabled action on a revision to the sign ordinance.
Commissioners said they want time to study a comparison provided by Assistant County Manager Blaine Williams between the existing regulations, changes recommended by the Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission, and tweaks sought by the city-county Joint Services Committee.
“It troubles me that we’re putting more restrictions on businesses right now,” Fricks said.
