Senator: Segregate garbage to prevent flooding

MANILA–Senator Loren Legarda called Sunday for implementation at the barangay level of waste segregation required by the Solid Waste
Management Act in the wake of flooding caused by Typhoon Falcon.
“Our citizens cannot live in fear whenever there are heavy downpours, and we cannot keep on evacuating them to safer places every time a typhoon occurs. Time and again, there is a failure to solve the problem from its very source—clogged esteros, canals, and waterways caused by improperly-thrown garbage,” she said.
The senator said that residents of barangays that have yet to segregate their garbage should demand their local governments to do so. She said that under the law, segregation of biodegradable, compostable, and reusable waste should be done by barangays, while city governments are tasked with collecting non-recyclable and special wastes.
“We have to learn personal responsibility for one’s own garbage,” she said.
Typhoon Falcon, which hit the Philippines last week brought heavy rains and floods. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council said Saturday that the typhoon affected more than 10,000 families, most of them in the provinces of Bulacan, Zambales, and Pampanga.
