Senator decries charges filed vs whistleblower

SENATOR Panfilo Lacson hinted Monday that Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez’s decision to charge a witness in the Fertilizer Fund Scam could go badly for her.
He said he initially saw Gutierrez, who has been pilloried by her critics, as an underdog but her filing of plunder charges against Jose Barredo, who testified at Senate hearings on the scam, might change his mind.
“When I read about charges being filed against a whistleblower like Barredo, who obviously didn’t benefit (from the scam), somehow at the back of my mind there’s a shift of sympathies,” he said.
He said the filing of charges, which the Ombudsman ordered on April 15, seemed like an afterthought and took a “hara-kiri” approach to include everyone.
However, Lacson said he will still wait for the evidence before deciding on Gutierrez’s case.
The senator added the impeachment trial will not bring closure to the corruption scandals that she allegedly failed to act on.
He said anti-graft court Sandiganbayan and the Supreme Court, not the Senate, should close the cases of alleged corruption during the Arroyo administration.
He added the government should not shield allies who may have had a hand in the P728-million Fertilizer Fund Scam. “If they benefited — even if they are allies — if they played with the funds, they should be held responsible.” (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
