Sanchez wins recount: daughter

THE daughter of the late vice governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr. yesterday said her father is now vindicated after leading in a recount by at least 12,891 votes against defeated vice gubernatorial hopeful Glenn Soco.
Grizelda “Gigi” Sanchez Zaballero said the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has completed the revision of the 200 ballot boxes containing 13,200 election returns from Mandaue City, considered as Soco’s bailiwick.
Although the Comelec 2nd Division rejected the motion for intervention of Zaballero on the protest Soco filed against her father, she was granted “observer’s status,” which gave her aide Ferliza Constratista and her cousin Busay Barangay Captain Yody Sanchez a chance to record all the results.
Ferliza said she will furnish the Cebu media with the detailed result of the revision from the first day, July 11, up to yesterday, once the Comelec makes an official statement.
Zaballero said the revision of the 200 ballot boxes ended yesterday morning, and after learning about the 12,891 lead of her father, they felt vindicated.
“The people should know that my late father (vice governor Sanchez) won in a clean and honest election. He was an honest politician who never cheated in an election,” Zaballero said.
Not interested
She said the public should also know that she is not interested in politics and all she wants is to protect the ballots cast for her father.
“I hope Glenn Soco is man enough to accept defeat. He better shake my hand and concede. It’s nice to hear him saying ‘napilde gyud diay ko and I will run again (I really lost),” Zaballero said.
However, Soco said it’s premature for Zaballero to claim victory.
“I’m actually wondering where they got the figure when the Comelec has not yet issued an official statement, and they are not anymore a party to the case. We can only surmise that there was manipulation in that election,” Soco said.
Soco also said he is wondering why Zaballero is also using the Liberal Party (LP), which filed a motion for intervention that was also rejected by the Comelec.
But Zaballero said that although they did not seek the help of LP, she thanked the party for caring for their leaders in Cebu.
