Rioja Wine
The world famous Rioja wine region lies within the ‘Autonomous Community’ of La Rioja (Comunidad Autónoma de La Rioja) in the north of Spain. The region derives its name from the río (river) Oja, a tributary of the Ebro river which flows through its length. Rioja was the first region in Spain to be awarded the highest quality category of DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada) due to its proven track record of consistently producing top quality wines.
Rioja is unique in many ways but most importantly, it is the friendly grape growing conditions with a varied range of soil and topographical features that sets it apart from the other wine growing regions of the country. First and foremost, the Cantabrian mountain in its north and west not only provides the perfect shelter from the wet and cold Atlantic influence but also protects the area’s vineyards from the severe winds typical of the region. Then there is the variation in its soil – the basis of classifying Rioja’s sub-regions, along with the accompanying climatic features which add to the versatility of the region. For individual descriptions of the three sub-regions of Rioja, please see the table below.
The diversity of the region’s terroir is truly reflected in its wines, which range from easy drinking young red wines to the more rustic and fuller styles, capable of cellaring for many years. Tempranillo is Rioja’s claim to fame which thrive on the clay and limestone based soils of the best vineyard sites. Nevertheless, most of these wines are typically blends with Garnacha playing the most important role as Tempranillo’s partner. It is often used to provide body to the wines. It is also used in the rosés (Rosado) as well as varietal wines. Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano are other red varieties that often find their way into the Riojas, although in small quantities. Cabernet Sauvignon also finds favor as a blending partner with some notable producers.
Most top Rioja red wines are matured in new American oak barrels although many wineries have successfully experimented with a combination of American and French oak. The wines are categorized according to the time they are aged for, like Joven (young), Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.
The region also produces quality white wines based on Viura (Macabeo elsewhere in Spain) and Malvasía. The barrel-fermented examples are much sought after.
