Religious group rules out sanctuary for Bedol
Tuesday, July 19, 2011
A RELIGIOUS organization that has, among others, provided refuge to anti-government whistleblowers has refused to give the same privilege to a poll official accused of helping rig elections in Mindanao.
The Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) on Monday ruled out the possibility of helping protect dismissed Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol.
The group is not inclined to provide him sanctuary unlike what it did to national broadband network (NBN) project whistleblower, Jun Lozada, AMRSP chairperson Sr. John Mananzan said in a radio interview.
In February 2008, the AMRSP provided sanctuary to Lozada after he revealed irregularities in a project that was supposed to provide a telecommunications backbone across the country. The project was entered into by the Philippine government and the Chinese government-backed firm, ZTE Corporation.
“Hindi lahat ng humihingi o lumalapit sa amin ay kaagad na kikukupkop namin. Kami ay piling-pili po ang binibigyan namin ng proteksyon. Ang tinutulungan po namin ay persons with integrity at hindi kami nasasabit sa anumang pulitika,” Mananzan told Church-run Radio Veritas.
Instead, the National Government should just offer him protection under the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Witness Protection Program, should Bedol be qualified, she said.
“Ayaw naming mapulitika. I mean, ang DOJ naman is capable of giving them protection,” said Mananzan.
Bedol emerged from hiding last week, four years after he was supposedly involved in rigging the May 2007 midterm polls.
Immediately after resurfacing, Bedol linked former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to rigging results of the 2004 and 2007 elections.
Bedol has a standing arrest warrant issued by the Commission on Elections after he was charged with indirect contempt, as well as for violating the Omnibus Election Code (Sec. 261), the Revised Penal Code (Sec. 226), and the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act (Sec. 3-e). (AMN/Sunnex)
