Regional landfill ‘a good idea’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Regional Development Council chairman and this city’s Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said recently that the establishment of a regional sanitary landfill is “a very good idea.”
The creation of a regional sanitary landfill was broached by Governor Lilia Pineda, who said that establishing one for the region will help solve solid waste management problems.
The governor added that fees for dumping of garbage in the landfill will be taken from local government units’ internal revenue allotment to make it sustainable.
Pineda’s proposal was supported by Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Art Punsalan, who said that it would have to pass the RDC for its assessment and hopefully eventual approval.
Rodriguez told Sun.Star Pampanga he personally finds the proposal a good idea.
“It is a very good idea. If it is initiated and all governors in the region will approve of a regional landfill at papayag ang isang host province at paghahatian proportionately ang gastos doon pati kung papaano ang tipping fee — siguro at cost — for maintenance purposes, ay maganda iyan,” he said.
Rodriguez, however, disclosed that some concerns regarding the landfill will have to be threshed out.
“Realizing it in the soonest possible time may pose some problems like sino ang gagastos at saan ang lugar. It will also require coordination at primarily kung sino ang papayag mag-host nito,” Rodriguez added. (Jovi T. De Leon)
