Public Works: 4 Pampanga rivers need clearing

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Central Luzon has identified four rivers in Pampanga that “badly need clearing.”
DPWH Manila Bay project coordinator Engineer Ethel Manalo identified the rivers as the The clearing of these rivers is part of the regional effort to help in the Manila Bay Guagua-Pasac River, Pampanga Bay, Guagua River and the Abacan River.

Aside from the waterways, the regional public works agency has also identified sites to be cleared of illegal structures.
Five barangays in Masantol and one barangay in Macabebe have 59 illegal fishpens and 177 illegal structures.
In the coastal town of Sasmuan, five barangays namely Mabuanbuan, Batang Uno, Batanga Dos, Malusak and Bangcal are host to 38 illegal fishpens.
In San Rafael, Guagua, 68 encroachments along the Guagua River exists.
Barangays Malabanias, Marisol and Sta. Teresita in Angeles City which are situated along the AbacanRiver have put up 234 structures.
In the Manila Bay cleanup, rehabilitation and restoration program, as per the Supreme Court order, the DPWH shall remove and demolish these structures built along water bodies in the five provinces in Central Luzon — Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, Bataan and Nueva Ecija.
Manalo has also emphasized the need for a relocation site where the displaced settlers could be resettled after the demolition.
The National Housing Authority should establish at least one site and the DPWH will give it the list of informal occupants.
Manalo also said the perennial problem of flooding Central Luzon will be addressed once the clearing is accomplished. (Charlene Cayabyab)
