Province gears up against calamities

THE Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) in Northern Mindanao announced its readiness to respond to calamities that are expected to hit the region due to continuous rainfalls.
In time for the Disaster Preparedness Month observance this July, the RDRRMC still urged the public to be vigilant of the ill effects of flooding incidents and other natural calamities.
The preparedness consciousness month is centered on the theme “Makialam, Makiisa; Sa Pagsugpo sa Panganib, may Maitutulong Ka.”
Carmelito A. Lupo, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Northern Mindanao, said despite the additional rubber boats acquired through the Philippine National Police’s regional command, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Northern Mindanao, the public still hold the safest hand of their lives by being watchful.
Lupo even compared the regional disaster preparedness effort last year against this year with much developed capability to respond during natural calamities.
Aside from the acquired additional rubber boats, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) also announced its acquisition of 100 automated rain cage, a weather station equipment used as early warning signals on weather disturbances practically to give more time for the government to announce evacuations.
In a press conference at the Philippine Information Agency on Monday, regional Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Director Loreto T. Bhagwani also announced that the city’s Oro Alert, a rescue team developed by the City Government to respond during calamities, is also ready in case of any disaster.
Marcial P. Labininay, officer-in-charge of the regional Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), also announced its acquisition of a satellite station in Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon that monitors weather activities.
For the police force’s part, Regina Abanales, chief of the regional police public information office, said officials and calamity experts of the regional police office had conducted several seminars and information campaigns to its stakeholders.
“We have also readied rubber boats, search lights and megaphones to heighten our capability during calamity responses,” she said.
