Prosecution doubts sickness of massacre suspect
May 5, 2011
THE prosecution on Wednesday accused former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. of faking illness when he asked a Quezon City court hearing the multiple murder charges in connection with the 2009 Maguindanao massacre case that he be brought out of jail for medical treatment.
Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu cast doubts on Ampatuan Sr.’s claim that he is suffering from pain due to prostate ailment, saying it may even be an escape ploy by the patriarch of the Ampatuan clan.
Ampatuan Sr., his son and namesake Ampatuan Jr. and other members of the influential clan were charged for the killing of 57 people, including 32 journalists.
The body of the 58th victim, local journalist Reynaldo Momay, has yet to be recovered by the authorities and his name is not included in the official list of victims of the gruesome massacre.
In an urgent motion, Ampatuan Sr. sought that he be referred to Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) physicians for examination of his pained leg and foot.
He also asked the court’s permission to seek confinement or treatment at a government hospital should the BJMP physician order so.
But Mangudadatu said Ampatuan Sr. might attempt to escape from the hospital to evade being arraigned for the multiple murders, adding this could not be discounted as Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of the Quezon City regional trial court branch 221 is set to render her decision on whether or not to arraign him.
“This is just another attempt to delay or escape his arraignment,” the governor said of the medical leave request.
So far, only Ampatuan Jr. of the Ampatuans has been arraigned in the case. A total of 197 were charged in the case, including policemen and militiamen in the employ of the Ampatuan clan only 90 are currently in detention.
Manhunt operations for the rest of the suspects are still being undertaken by security forces. (AH/Sunnex)
