Price of brown sugar up
Wednesday, December 29, 2010
JUST a few days more to go and it’s New Year. At this early, some people are certainly up doing their shopping for goods and commodities needed for Media Noche.
But last week, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office recorded a slight increase in the prices of at least two basic commodities in the market – brown sugar and macaroni.
From P58 per kilo, brown sugar now sells at P59 per kilo, based on the monitoring of DTI as of December 24, 2010.
Meanwhile, one brand of macaroni also had a slight increase of 25 centavos, from P41 per 450-kilogram pack two weeks ago to P41.25 as of last week.
However, the DTI also noted slight decrease in the prices of some basic goods, which include some brands of patis, spaghetti and macaroni.
From P14.80 for 350ml patis two weeks ago, the price went down to P13.95 as of December 24 while a 450-kg spaghetti now sells at P38.80 per pack, slightly down from P38.85 per pack price two weeks ago.
Some brands of macaroni also had a slight decrease in price, from P89.25 per one-kg pack two weeks ago to only P88.40 per pack last week.
Fruits, considered as the center of the New Year celebration, are still priced the same since three months ago.
Based on the weekly monitoring of the DTI, apples are still pegged at between P12 to P30 per piece while oranges sell at P20 to P28 each.
Pears, on the other hand, sell at between P12 to P27 per piece.
In supermarket and grocery stores, apples sell at P22 each, way above its year-ago price of P15.35 each while oranges can be bought at P25 each, also up from its year-ago price of P10 each.
The DTI conducts weekly monitoring on the prices of some basic commodities in select supermarkets and grocery stores in Cagayan de Oro to determine the movement in the prices of these goods.
