Poll: Too early to predict Aquino’s success, Filipinos say

June 28, 2011
MAJORITY of Filipinos feel it is too early to tell whether President Benigno Aquino III will succeed in office.
This, among others, was one of the results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey conducted from June 3 to 6.
Nearly-three fourths of the respondents polled, or 68 percent, said it is too early to predict if Aquino will succeed as President.
Only 22 percent felt certain that Aquino will succeed. Some 10 percent said he will fail as Chief Executive.
Malacanang said the survey reflected the public’s recognition of the magnitude of the task facing the Aquino administration.
“We view the opinion of our countrymen as reflected in the recent SWS survey as a recognition on the part of the public of the magnitude of the tasks before us,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
He noted that implementing reforms in government needs time and cooperation of all concerned agencies.
“The task of transforming our government and policies to promote inclusive growth, achieve justice for all and restore our institutions to provide genuine service to our people, requires the cooperation of all. It also requires time and sustained efforts from all concerned,” the Palace official said.
Lacierda also emphasized that the current administration is different from the nine-year Arroyo government and “obstacles of the past are being cleared away.”
“We now live in a different neighborhood where the obstacles of the past are being cleared away: and where the foundations are being laid for enduring reforms,” he said.
“We are confident that as we bring the good news to the attention of our people, confidence will continue to grow in the sustainability of our shared efforts to make the Philippines of 2016 as different from the Philippines of 2010 as day is from night,” he added.
Meantime, in a Pulse Asia survey conducted from May 21 to June 4, Vice President Jejomar Binay continues to hold the label of being the most trusted official in government, scoring a high 83 percent from his previous 81 percent approval and trust ratings.
In comparison, President Aquino garnered 71 percent, which is lower than his previous ratings.
In an interview with President Aquino during the inauguration of a coal plant in Cebu City, he defended the slip in his ratings, saying that period when the survey was conducted might have affect his approval ratings.
“On the dip on Pulse survey, you cannot be surging anytime, you have to look at more or less the margin of error and the period the survey was conducted. The time when oil prices were surging, they are blaming me for something which I cannot control. I have no control on the conflict in the Middle East,” Aquino stressed.
He also scored his critics, particularly the militant group Migrante, for apparently not appreciating the government’s effort in helping overseas workers in the conflict-ridden countries in the Middle East.
“To Migrante, are you used to have a caring government? All OFWs in Libya were asked to evacuate, four or five times they were asked by our embassy to relocate…Tayo ba ay nagkulang?” he asked.
He also took note of the successful recovery by the Philippine government of an engineer kidnapped in Yemen.
“To Migrante, it is okay to criticize but maybe you could also tell us where we could improve,” he added.
President Aquino took a swipe at former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the latter’s recent criticisms against the administration.
Aquino said Arroyo gave him a biggest compliment for saying they are totally different from each other.
“From what I understand Mrs. Arroyo basically said that I am different from her. I need to thank her, because I think (being like her) is severest,” the President said.
“It is like a biggest compliment that anybody can get, that I am her complete opposite,” he added.
