Poll body secures 3 other election fraud witnesses

THREE other witnesses who can further shed light on alleged irregularities in the 2007 election in Maguindanao have been placed under the Commission on Elections (Comelec) custody.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes announced this Thursday, saying the move was made to ensure the safety and protection of the poll body’s employees and their families.
Even though acting election officer of Shariff Saydona Mustapha town Saliao Amba, former acting election officer of Sultan sa Barongis town Magsaysay Mohamad, and Maguindanao computerized voters’ list technician Salonga Edzela have not received any death threats, they have been provided with ample security, he said.
“Kailangan i-secure dahil nagsalita na sila e at lumabas na pangalan nila so hindi natin alam… basta, just to be sure, we secure our people. Empleyado namin itong mga ito e,” he said. “Siguradong may threat yan dahil ngayon nag-announce na sila ng kanilang alam.”
Affidavits of dismissed Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol and the three other witnesses in the purported 2007 poll fraud have been found to corroborate one another.
The Comelec chair said these affidavits along with other documents and records will be used to determine if there is a need to go into a formal preliminary investigation on alleged anomalies in 2007 elections.
Bedol is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City, as he serves his six months sentence after he was cited for contempt by the poll body.
The Comelec is already coordinating with the Department of Interior and Local Government regarding the security of three witnesses. (FP/Sunnex)
