Policeman nabbed for alleged carnapping, robbery
MANILA — The cleansing of police ranks continues after authorities arrested this week another erring policeman on charges of carnapping and robbery.
Police Chief Superintendent Antonio Decano, Northern Police District director, said operatives arrested Police Officer 1 Joel Samonte inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City on Monday.
A local court in Malolos, Bulacan, has issued arrest warrants against Samonte, a member of the Regional Headquarters Support Group, for violating the anti-carnapping and anti-highway robbery laws.
Samonte is just one of the several cops who were put in hot water this week for alleged misconduct.
On Tuesday, 11 cops from the Manila Police District including a station chief were sacked and charged for allegedly extorting P1 million from a Filipino-Canadian woman in Zambales.
A senior police officer 1 was also apprehended early this week for taking P18,000 from a member of the US Navy.
Metro Manila police chief Leonardo Espina said the removal of “scalawags” in the police ranks is among his priorities.
“Those policemen involved in kotong (extortion) and in other crimes should distance [themselves] from the police ranks,” Espina said.
“I won’t let them ruin the image of the organization and of the greater number of policemen who are upright and honest in their service,” he added.
Espina’s son was also a victim of police misconduct when a senior police officer tried to extort P20,000 from him. The officer was dismissed from police service for a separate charge of extortion victimizing a son of a retired military general. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
