Peña: The Latest on Plastic Bags
February 25, 2011
THE thin plastic bag is being blamed for causing pollution and flooding. Because of this, Los Baños and Mandaluyong have banned single-use plastic bags. Other municipalities might follow. In big malls, plastic bags are not given free every Wednesday.
I was informed that the plastic industry is hurting. They want to let local government units know that they are feeling the effect of the plastic ban. As they said in their position paper, thousands are depending on the industry for livelihood. Many might lose their jobs.
I trust the wisdom of our legislators. I believe that lawmakers have carefully studied the pros and cons of regulating the use of plastic bags. If there are proposed ordinances banning plastic in your towns or cities, I encourage you dear readers to participate in the public hearings.
In Makati, a plastic recycling campaign dubbed “Invisible Collection” was launched last Wednesday. The project’s objective is environmental conservation and poverty alleviation through the collection and recycling of plastic bags. Plastics collected will either help the production of recycled novelty products by the communities being assisted by Invisible Sisters or be collected by PPIA for recycling.
The project is headed by the Ayala Foundation in partnership with the Invisible Sisters, Asian Social Enterprise Incubator, Philippine Plastics Industry Association (PPIA), Ayala Malls, Ayala Land, and Ayala Property Management Corporation.
According to the information forwarded to me, the pilot collection bin at Glorietta was a big success. More than 6,000 plastic bags were collected in three months. That’s about 67 plastic bags a day.
Thirteen more bins will be strategically placed at different Ayala Malls and Ayala Residences.
So, will there be a plastic collection bin at Marquee Mall in Angeles City?

And now some good news. According to Earth 911, a Japanese inventor has discovered a way to turn plastic bags, bottles and caps into usable crude oil that can be used for heating homes on an individual level. Large-scale testing of this technology is still being done.
The machine uses one kWh of energy to convert two pounds of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) or polystyrene (PS) plastic into one quart of oil. The oil can then be used in a power generator or can be further refined with a second machine into gasoline.
The not-so-good news however is the price tag of $10,000 or almost half a million pesos. Hopefully the price will go down as demand for the device increases.
