Pangan: Arrest Unrest

February 25, 2011

RESTIVE and unstable is the global peace situation and people power protests and demonstrations are more prevalent and more pronounced, especially in the Middle East. As we speak, chaos reigns in Bahrain and parts of Kuwait, further destabilizing the precarious order in the Arab countries known throughout history as restless, violence-prone and unruly.
To the senses, there is nothing more assaulting than when multitudes show their dissatisfaction on, and of, their leaders as is the current demand of Bahrainis for their monarch to relax his autocratic rule and allow access to constitutional monarchy and, to some extent, to voice out dissent.
Of course, we are aware that, finally, for about four decades of uninterrupted reign, Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak has seemingly, albeit not absolutely, relinquished his post, not to a constitutional successor, but to the military, his military. This means that he has not totally abandoned the post because the military still holds him in deep awe and therefore it is as if Mubarak has not left at all.
The persuasive effect of people power shown in Egypt has brought down one of Arab world’s top leaders but there is no certainty that Mubarak will not resurface some time when the protesters relax their guard.
As compared to our version in 1986, that upheaval in Egypt still leaves traces of Mubarak’s clout and influence. He still has stooges in the military, a strong and potent force to reckon with, given Arab standards.
Only the thought of loosening the grip of autocratic rulers may give the people some elixir of hope of extricating themselves from the cruel yoke of harsh autocratic rule and ruthless dictatorship.
For the world leaders grouped in the United Nations, it becomes imperative for them to find lasting solutions to the unrest now prevailing. Arrest the unrest and make doable moves to prevent its resurgence.

Today, we observe the 25th anniversary of the first Edsa uprising, that milestone which drastically changed our political landscape. This is the same people power movement which is now replicated throughout the world. The voices of dissent then heard in the Edsa uprising have cemented the maxim Vox populi, vox Dei. In our case, the end justified the means: the dictator Marcos and his family were resolutely driven out of the seat of power and their source of their greed.
What is lamentable, however, is that we have short collective memory such that we forgave so easily the grave deeds of the infamous Marcos reign. You see, the wife, son and daughter of that late but unlamented dictator are now lording over their respective areas of jurisdiction. And to think they were the reasons for our long-lived misery!
Today, as we observe what turned out to be an important part of our colorful history as a nation, we can only hope that never again would we witness another upheaval, rather, we hope that this costly event has strengthened our resolve to be solid and proud as a people and prosperous and sound as a nation. Let us accept the fact that we have gained something from that fateful uprising. We should not, by all means, lose it.

I’d like to extend my belated birthday greetings to the energetic, hardworking and pacesetting Angeles City Mayor Edgardo “Edpam” D. Pamintuan. He has his plans detailed and laid out so well, such as keeping the peace and order situation in his highly urbanized city manageable, the garbage problem tolerable and the benefits and perks of his constituents, including basic services, delivered on time and, additionally, those of the employees of the city hall.
He has all bases covered, so to speak, including issues on sports and culture. He is in the forefront of sports activities like CLRAA and sponsoring health buff cop Macaraeg. He is receptive and responsive to calls, such as that one I reminded him of the proliferation of informal settlers on both sides of the Hensonville Bridge. I know Edpam can handle this.
