Pampangos warned vs lahar, tsunami

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Though Mt. Pinatubo is unlikely to erupt again within 200 years, state seismologists warned residents here to be on the watch for lahar flow in case of unusual rainfall.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Renato Solidum Jr. said people who have reclaimed their old communities near rivers and streams once crossed by lahar and mudflow in the 90s should still take precautionary steps in averting possible disasters.
He advised communities and local government units to set disaster and evacuation plans in place, saying although lahar flow may not be triggered by ordinary rains, lahar may still occur during instances of heavy downpour.
“There should be adequate preparation in place. There is always that risk even though most would argue that they have yet to experience any lahar flow in years. This level of preparedness should also be applied in cases of flooding and Pampanga gets flooded frequently as we all know,” Solidum said.
Solidum also advised provincial officials to start drafting a tsunami response and preparedness plan for Pampanga’s coastal towns.
Unknown to many people, part of Manila Bay is a section of Pampanga Bay that runs from the towns of Sasmuan, Masantol, and Macabebe.
“In case there is a strong quake that would occur in the South China Sea, we cannot discount the possibility that a tsunami may occur and enter the Manila Bay. This is not to scare anyone but to put necessary preparedness plans in place so that we will not be caught flat-footed,” Solidum said.
He said Pampanga is within an area safe from experiencing strong earthquakes, the likes of those that hit Japan and New Zealand.
