Pampanga town implements ID system for farmers
January 31, 2011
CANDABA — The Municipal Government recently started the initial implementation of an “identification (ID) system” for farmers designed to facilitate a speedy transactions with concerned government agencies.
Mayor Jerry Pelayo said the ID system will also eliminate any form of corruption, particularly during calamity, whenever the National Government is providing assistance to farmers in the form of free seedlings, pesticides, fertilizers and other agricultural needs.
Pelayo said the identification card contains the number of hectares that a farmer actually tills, and the nature of the crop being planted such as palay, corn, melons, and vegetables.
The mayor said last year, a group of individuals who represent themselves as members of a farmer cooperative here managed to get 20 carabaos from the Philippine Carabao Center. The farmers, whom the group allegedly represents, however, did not benefit from the carabao.
“The carabaos were reportedly sold,” Pelayo said in vernacular.
The ID system, he said, will also give convenience to farmers as some dealings with private and public entities require a proof of identity.
“They could also use this identification card during checkpoints conducted by the local police to show that they are bonafide residents of this town,” he added. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
