Pampanga site of 1st Rice Biotech farm

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Agriculture (DA) recently launched the country’s first Rice Biotechnology Demo Farm in the adjacent towns of Floridablanca in Pampanga and Dinalupihan in Bataan.
Agriculture Central Luzon information officer Jun Espiritu said the establishment of the demo farm is part of the provisions of the Nutrition Farming using Biotechnology project, which is an initiative of the Agricultural Training Institute 3 and Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC) 3.
The project seeks to promote intensively pilot tested and economically feasible alternative farming technology and environmentally sound agricultural practices.
Espiritu added that a total of 1,000 hectares covering villages of Dampe and Bodega in Floridablanca and villages of San Simon, Tucop and Pagalanggang in Dinalupihan were selected as the pilot areas of the project.
Out of these areas, the 100 hectares have been allocated as a demo farm for six private companies involved in organic farming, while the remaining 900 hectares will serve as production sites for 700 farmer-cooperators.
The main features of the demo farm are: organic fertilizer testing and evaluation, shallow tube well electric driven irrigation system, sustainable rice production, people’s organization and management, synchronized and compact farming, mechanization and marketing, provision for implementing livelihood projects on livestock and fishery, seed production of rice varieties and provision of production loans.
Espiritu said this Central Luzon-initiated project is set to be replicated soon in all regions across the country.
