Pampanga kicks off Pinatubo memorial

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Government Friday officially started the 20th Mt. Pinatubo commemoration with a massive tree planting led by Governor Lilia Pineda in Nabuclod, Floridablanca.
Capitol’s remembrance of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo 20 years ago is aptly dubbed “Rising from the Ashes.”

Arwin Lingat of the Arts, Culture and Tourism Office of Pampanga told Sun.Star Pampanga that the symbolic kick-off activity is the start of a series of events meant to celebrate the resiliency of the Kapampangans, who rose from devastation wrought by what historians dubbed as “the volcano in our backyard.”
Lingat said the Nabuclod tree planting will be followed by the unveiling of the Pinatubo timeline and film viewing, together with the blessing of the Benigno Aquino, Jr. Hall morning of June 13.
The highlight of the commemoration however, will be on June 15 — the exact day of Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption — where a 5:00 am commemorative walk to San Guillermo Church in Bacolor will be held. It will be followed by the simultaneous thanksgiving to be celebrated in the province’s 22 town parishes and a solemn Eucharistic celebration at San Guillermo Church.
On the same day, provincial officials will open the trade and food fair, furniture and photo exhibit at SM City Pampanga and in the afternoon will be capped by a Serenata at San Guillermo Church and ceremonial lighting of the giant lantern with fireworks display at the megadike.
Lingat added that on June 16, the Nabuclod Project will be launched by Governor Pineda, followed by the blessing of the Mt. Pinatubo View Deck, launching of the Kulart exhibit, cultural street dance, distribution of goods and food items to Aetas, inauguration of the educational assistance and Kabyayan program capped with the “Nabuclod Salo-Salo.”
On June 17 will be the early morning Wetland Cruise from Lubao to Sasmuan while the culminating activities, Lingat said, will be the Pampanga Vintage Car Show at SM City Clark and the Off-Road Challenge in Minalin town.
